How the Guitar Chords was Formed?

Whole tone- is the distance between to notes with a one whole step. that was 2 frets away. For example, the distance between C to D is one whole step.
Half tone- is one half step distance between two notes. that was 1 fret away. For example,
the distance between E to F is one half step. Remember, there is no E# or Fb and B# or Cb.

Memorize the following major scale formula because all major scales are built with this formula.

W - W - H - W - W - W - H

where; W = whole tone, H = half tone
Now, take a look at the C major scale below. It is made of this formula.

What is a Chord?

A basic chord is made of three notes. The 1st (root), 3rd and 5th.

C major scale

C D E F G A B C
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

For example the C chord, lets take the I, III, and V. that was C-E-G. Therefore the C chord are compose 3 notes C E G.

Then let’s play it by following the given TAB below,

E-------0-----------------------------------------------------
B-------1-----------------------------------------------------
G-------0-----------------------------------------------------
D-------2-----------------------------------------------------
A-------3-----------------------------------------------------
E-------3-----------------------------------------------------

Then play the C major scale over the fretboard.

E-----------------------------------------------------------
B---- ------------------------------------------------------
G------------------------------2---4---5------------------
D----------------2---3---5--------------------------------
A------3---5-----------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------------------

If you're having a hard time figuring it out the notes over the fretboard GO BACK to lesson 1
and look for the Fretboard diagram.

Now let’s take another example this time in D chord

D major scale

D E F# G A B C# D
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Let’s take the I, III, and V. that was D-F#-A. Therefore, the D chord are compose 3 notes D-F#-A.

Then let’s play it again by following the given TAB below,

E-------2-----------------------------------------------------
B-------3-----------------------------------------------------
G-------2-----------------------------------------------------
D-------0-----------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------

Then play the D major scale over the fretboard. The same pattern as the C major scale but moving up one whole step which is two fret higher.

E----------------------------------------------------------
B---- -----------------------------------------------------
G--------------------------------4---6---7--------------
D-----------------4---5---7-----------------------------
A-------5---7--------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------

E chord pattern

E------0-----------------------------------------------------
B------0-----------------------------------------------------
G------1-----------------------------------------------------
D------2-----------------------------------------------------
A------2-----------------------------------------------------
E------0-----------------------------------------------------

F chord pattern

E-------1-----------------------------------------------------
B-------1-----------------------------------------------------
G-------2-----------------------------------------------------
D-------3-----------------------------------------------------
A-------3-----------------------------------------------------
E-------1-----------------------------------------------------

G chord pattern

E------3-----------------------------------------------------
B------3-----------------------------------------------------
G------0-----------------------------------------------------
D------0-----------------------------------------------------
A------2-----------------------------------------------------
E------3-----------------------------------------------------

A chord pattern

E-------0-----------------------------------------------------
B-------2-----------------------------------------------------
G-------2-----------------------------------------------------
D-------2-----------------------------------------------------
A-------0-----------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------

B chord pattern

E-------2-----------------------------------------------------
B-------4-----------------------------------------------------
G-------4-----------------------------------------------------
D-------4-----------------------------------------------------
A-------2-----------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------

Now it’s your turn. Create the same formula for the next E, F, G, A and B major scale chord pattern. Find the location of all notes within the fretboard.

Remember! To play or walk away. Do your lessons now!
